The Healthy and Wealthy You: Here’s To YOU and Eating Well!

Posted by admin on September 8th, 2010

Cheers! Here is to YOUR vibrant good health!

Who doesn’t love to eat?  People who gather talk about the weather but eventually the conversation turns to the topic of food, isn’t that so?

What to eat and how to prepare it can be a dilemma.  Some people are working full time; they may even hold down two jobs just to keep body and soul together.  Others don’t like to cook.  There are folks who declare they have no time to shop for foodstuffs and furthermore, they may not know HOW to cook.  I actually know people who insist they do not have a clue WHAT to purchase for their meals.

People like those risk their wealth AND their health by habitually eating in cafes, ordering take-out or plucking something from a grocer’s freezer to microwave.

SIDEBAR: Microwaving can be hazardous to your health and wealth.  It is highly advisable NEVER, NEVER to use a microwave oven under any circumstances! END SIDEBAR.

But your humble blogger digresses.

Trick or Treaters ALREADY?

Posted by admin on October 16th, 2008

It is a bone of contention between my peeps and me that Hallowe’en is not my favorite holiday.

Oh, sure.  Time was when we created a “House of Horrors” for our kids and their friends.  We took the windows facing the front porch out so kids could gather on the porch and  reach through the openings for their treats, handed to them by a hideous, cackling witch.  That would be yours truly.  We used that same arrangement fin order for them to touch “cat entrails” (spaghetti) “critters’ eyes” (peeled grapes) and the “fur of dead animals” (a fluffy rug).  That was the year they had to “drink blood” which was red powdered drink mix with just enough cherry flavored gelatin to make it sticky and believable.  The children were so ‘scared’ by our ghoulishness that word got around… …we must have had every boy and girl in town taste our concoction at least one time!

I traipsed all over town Trick or Treating with my own youngsters.  We would all  be in costume, carrying the obligatory treat bag.  It’s no wonder I gained weight during that time period.  Those kids couldn’t eat ALL that candy by themselves.  One year I was so close to delivery of a new baby that the only costume that fit me was a clown’s!

In those days every Sunday School in our little town made sure every Hallowe’ener had a UNICEF container so the children could learn about giving to those less fortunate than themselves.

We had a fortune telling “booth” in our house once.  I was Madame BOO and we kept the house dark, except for the flashlight on Madame Boo’s table.  The children had to file in, have their fortune told and Madame Boo ‘predicted’ what their treat would be.  The kids loved this schtick so much that most of them returned.

When I was a kid-remember, I am older than dirt-my family had to be away from the house one scarey October 31st.  Mom left a jar full of dimes on the porch with a note, asking the kids to take their dime and spend it wisely.  When we returned, the jar was still on the porch, and most of the dimes were there, tooCan you even imagine that happening in today’s world?  I think NOT.

Over the years it seemed to me that the Trick or Treaters turned into taller and greedier beggers; hence, my disdain for the holiday.  To those who voice their objection to my “Bah! Humbug!” attitude regarding Hallowe’en, I simply offer that I GOT OVER it, the way you get over the measles.  I OUTGREW it.

This year, however, I am heartened to learn that educational projects are being sponsored by children’s museums, strip malls, and dental clinics.  The children are encouraged to attend these events in their costumes, treats are offered and they learn something important about dental care, history, and such like.  Families can be involved in these kinds of pursuits, as well.

I was astonished to note that even the media outlets are encouraging people to MAKE costumes in lieu of tossing cash in the direction of the retailers.  This move was no doubt the product of Wall Street’s malaise.  But it is a fabulous idea to get whole families creating together, working together, making some memories.  I can get my arms around that.

Well, if I did not have prior plans for Hallowe’en I might consider parlaying my own creativity into some sort of get up…with this face – well, there was a good reason why I played the part of the witch all those years ago and age has not been generous or benevolent in that respect!

But thank goodness I won’t be needing that clown suit this time around!

This Hallowe’en I could dress up disguised as The Dinner Diva!

What’s To Eat?

Posted by admin on September 23rd, 2008

Menus and meal planning are ongoing events.  As soon as the dinner table is cleared someone is bound to pipe up and ask about snacks, about the next meal, even about next Sunday’s dinner.

Would you love to have some personal assistance in this regard?  I have some ideas to share: Menu Mailer,  for example, is a life saver.  It helps you create great meal plans and lays out your grocery items just with the click of a mouse!  The Dinner Diva HERSELF has taken all the heavy lifting out of meal planning and menus.  I hope you will give her the opportunity to see for yourself. SavingDinner.com is THE way to goLeanne Ely and her mastery of the culinary arts has simplified MY life…her home made mixes are standard fare at our house and she practically INVENTED chicken ‘stretcher’ meals!  She will show you how to easily plan your food to be HEALTHY and that will help you in the WEALTHY department.

Here is healthy food idea from a Canadian publication that came to me from a Toastmasters Club pal:  (Thanks, Ralph)  It is cost effective as well as tasty:

1/2 can black beans, rinsed & draned

1 tomatoes, seeded & chopped

2/3 cup chopped onion

1/4 tsp garlic powder

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
